It was discovered in 1697 that port wine stored in these vaults (for aging) tasted better than port than port aged in Spain. Unfortunately, in 1997 this practice stopped because the European Union that stated that only wine made "and aged" in Port Spain could be called Port. Rather than accept the name change to "fortified wine," Newman & Company chose to close this part of the business and all Newman & Company's Port is made and aged in Port Spain. |
